A large fire ripped through the roof of a Randwick pizza restaurant last night — and it was too close for comfort for neighbours.
Firefighters were alerted to the blaze at Queens Park Pizza in Darley Rd, opposite Queens Park, at 11.14pm and were at the scene in eight minutes.
Sam Yeomans lives with his family next door and was alerted to the fire by neighbours.
He soon saw that the fire was only about two metres from his bedroom wall.
He said firefighters soon arrived and began knocking in the sides of the shop to access the fire.
“Thank God they turned up promptly to get on top of it,” he said.
“It was one of those things that looked like it could fall apart. It’s a pretty old building.”
The fire was extinguished after midnight.
A Fire and Rescue NSW spokeswoman said the fire started in the pizza shop in a cavity that was wet due to the heavy rain.
The cause appeared to be electrical, she said.
The blaze spread to the roof and presented a complex task for firefighters as multiple levels within the roof space were alight.
Eleven crews from Randwick, Woollahra, Bondi, City of Sydney, Alexandria, Maroubra and Darlinghurst attended.
Paramedics also attended but the shop was unoccupied.
Queens Park Pizza is not trading tonight.
