Legend George Piggins picks his greatest Rabbitohs

GEORGE Piggins is a club legend having played in the great sides of the 60s and 70s. But who makes it in to his top 10 Rabbitohs of all time?

CUT George Piggins and he would bleed cardinal and myrtle.

The 73-year-old is a club legend having played in some of the great side, alongside many of those to make our top 50 shortlist.

But who makes his top 10?

He admits it was near impossible comparing many of his mates against each other.

But he’s come up with a top 10 list — and what a list it is. At numbers nine and 10 are the only current players: Sam Burgess and Greg Inglis.

At eight is teammate Paul Sait, whose time at the Rabbitohs almost mirrored that of Piggins. Seven is another teammate in Gary Stevens, the hard as nails former Souths junior. John Sattler, the tough prop who captained the Rabbitohs to four Grand Final victories, is next.

Another former Souths junior in Ray Branighan is at five with John O’Neill at four.

Piggins played with two of his top three — and would have loved to have played with the other.

Third is Bob McCarthy, who has featured in many of your top threes. Second is Ron Coote, who terrorised sides throughout the 1960s.

His No. 1, as with Craig Coleman last week, is Clive Churchill. “I can tell you it wasn’t easy,” Piggins said of making his choices.

“The majority of players on my favourite player list were those I played with at Souths. You know, back then our club had three very competitive sides and I reckon our second-grade sides would have been competitive against most first grade teams in the competition.”

Voting in our greatest Rabbitohs poll ends next Sunday. We will reveal the results in the paper and online week beginning Sept 3.
