An application for a court order sought to protect one of the NRLW’s leading players from her mother has been delayed as police look to obtain body-worn video.

Jenny Sergis, the mother of Sydney Roosters player Jess Sergis, did not appear at Waverley Local Court on Thursday.

She is set to contest a police application for an apprehended violence order (AVO).

Sergis’ lawyer Justin Drew of McGirr & Associates said the defence counsel “is yet to receive” a brief from police.

“Ah for goodness sake … sergeant this is becoming far too prevalent,” Magistrate Jacqueline Milledge said.

The police prosecutor told the court “the material that police rely on” included a police statement and body worn video “which hasn’t been completed”.

She asked Magistrate Milledge for “a further two weeks” to come up with the brief of evidence, and to allow defence counsel to view the footage.

Police are required to serve the brief by April 21, with the defence to file their response by May 4.

Court documents state a provisional AVO was made to protect Roosters’ centre Jessica Sergis on January 20, however no criminal charges have been laid.

High profile lawyer Paul McGirr, whose firm is representing Jenny Sergis, previously said it was a “very serious matter”.

The provisional AVO in the standard terms stated Jenny Sergis must not “assault or threaten”, “stalk, harass or intimidate”, or “intentionally destroy any property” belonging to her daughter Jessica.

She also “must not approach or be in the company of Jessica for at least 12 hours after drinking alcohol or taking illicit drugs”.

On the last occasion, Jenny Sergis’ lawyer told the court his client was taking part in a 12-week residential program and confirmed they would not be agreeing to the AVO application.

Jessica Sergis, who was awarded Dally M Player of the Year in 2019, has become the leading name in women’s rugby league and vastly popular on social media, garnering more than 91,000 followers on Instagram.

The 25-year-old was part of the Jillaroos side which won the 2021 World Cup in the United Kingdom.

The matter will return to Waverley Local Court on May 11.
