An application for a court order to protect one of the NRLW’s most prolific players from her mother will be contested, a court has heard.
Jenny Sergis, the mother of World Cup winning Jillaroo and Sydney Roosters player Jess Sergis, did not appear at Waverley Local Court on Thursday where a police application for an apprehended violence order was mentioned.
Jenny Sergis’ lawyer Nick Kelly of McGirr & Associates told the court his client was currently taking part in a “12-week residential program” and confirmed they would not be agreeing to the AVO application.
The court heard police are required to serve a brief by March 16, with Jenny Sergis’ lawyers to file their response by April 6.
Court documents state a provisional AVO was made to protect professional rugby league player Jessica Sergis on January 20. No criminal charges have been laid.
High profile lawyer Paul McGirr, whose firm is representing Jenny Sergis, previously said it was “a very serious matter”.
The provisional AVO in the standard terms stated Jenny Sergis must not “assault or threaten”, “stalk, harass or intimidate”, or “intentionally destroy any property” belonging to her daughter Jessica.
She also “must not approach or be in the company of Jessica for at least 12 hours after drinking alcohol or taking illicit drugs”.
Jessica Sergis, who was awarded Dally M Player of the Year in 2019, has become the leading name in women’s rugby league.
She recently featured at the Fox League NRL launch at Darling Harbour and the Creed III Sydney Premiere at the Hoyts Entertainment Quarter.
The 25-year-old centre was part of the Jillaroos side which thrashed New Zealand 54-4 in the 2021 World Cup in the United Kingdom and was also part of the St George Illawarra Dragons’ premiership defeat in 2019.
The matter will return to Waverley Local Court on April 13.
