Plans have been revealed to bring back water slides to Botany Aquatic Centre as part of a $7.5 million upgrade.

The move will attract plenty of nostalgia among local residents who remember the aquatic centre in its former glory, before the old water slides were torn down in 2018.

A local swimmer says the new upgrades will “get more kids back there” and be a huge boost for the area.

The $7.5 million proposal to upgrade Botany Aquatic Centre was lodged this month by Bayside Council and features plans to build three new water slides, new aqua play areas, and the removal of an existing toddlers’ pool.

“The water slides proposed replace water slides previously demolished in 2018 that did not demonstrate compliance with relevant standards,” the proposal read.

“The proposed works involve the renewal of this asset and have strong community support.”

The new slides will include plenty of twists and turns and stand about 16m tall.

Local resident Logan Ingle recalled fond memories visiting the aquatic centre with his swimming club in the past, and said it was great to hear the slides were making a return.

“I was pretty sad when they took them down,” he said. “There was no other ones close by so it was good to have something like that.”

He said the planned upgrades would bring a lot of children back to the aquatic centre.

“It would be heaps good. Kids would go back there.

“The only people that use the pool now are people doing laps, so it would be good to get more kids back there using the water slides. I would go back there.”

Botany Aquatic Centre was opened in 1966 and currently includes three outdoor swimming pools including a 50m, a 22m, and a toddlers’ pool as well as amenities.

If the development application is approved, landscaping work will also be carried out to improve existing open green space.
