A high school was evacuated in Sydney’s southeast as fireys battled to control a blaze believed to have started in a woodworking classroom.

Firefighters have extinguished a blaze at a Maroubra school which started in a woodwork classroom.

Students and staff were evacuated from Champagnat Catholic College (also known as Marist College) on Donovan Ave in Maroubra on Thursday afternoon following a fire at the school.

NSW Fire and Rescue confirmed they received a call about 2.30pm and the blaze was extinguished at 3.26pm.

A Fire and Rescue spokesman said the fire had been contained to a small part of the school.

“The fire was contained to the dust extraction system in the wood working classroom,” he said.

Some roads were closed near the school while fire crews battled the fire but had since reopened as at 4pm.
