THE historic Royal Hall of Industries will be transformed into the Sydney Swans headquarters while iconic music venue the Hordern Pavilion will be renovated as part of a $65 million project.
Premier Gladys Berejiklian announced $20 million towards the major proposal for the Moore Park venues.
The Royal Hall of Industries will also be home to NSW Swifts netball club, the future Sydney Swans AFL Women’s Team, Adam Goodes’ and Michael O’Loughlin’s GO Foundation and the Clontarf Foundation, a not-for-profit organisation that helps in the education and employment of young indigenous men.
It will also be an Australian Red Cross Blood Service donation centre.
The Hordern Pavilion will remain a live music venue.
“The Royal Hall of Industries and Hordern Pavilion has a special place in the hearts of Sydneysiders. It has always been a location for the people and it is great to see that history embraced and respected,” Ms Berejiklian said.
“This exciting new project will create a vibrant community place that respects the great cultural, architectural and heritage significance of these iconic venues.”
The Royal Hall of Industries will include high-performance training facilities for the Swans and the Swifts, an international-standard indoor netball court, a multipurpose indoor function and recreations space for community events and a museum to tell the history of the 105-year-old building and the Swans.
There will be a new outdoor entertainment space between the buildings to connect the venues with the forthcoming light rail stop.
Work is expected to start by the middle of next year, subject to design, planning and development approvals.
Outgoing Sydney Swans chief executive Andrew Ireland said their new centre of excellence would give the club a competitive edge.
“It will be a world-class facility,” he said.
“There won’t be anything like it in terms of the combination of heritage building and modern sporting facilities.”
