A FORMER journalist and 2GB shock jock has been elected the new mayor of Randwick Council.
Labor’s Kathy Neilson was voted in by her fellow councillors last Wednesday night just days after Lindsay Shurey announced she was stepping down from the role to fight for the state seat of Coogee.
Mayor Neilson, who has been a councillor since 2012, said one of her main objectives would be to protect Randwick from overdevelopment and — in particular — high-rise.
She said it would be tough given the ambitious housing targets the council faced, but insisted it was possible.
The environment is also high on her agenda as well as sustainability.
Brought up in nearby Rose Bay, Cr Neilson has lived all over the world including Long Island, New York, where she completed a masters in history, California, Denmark, Germany and the UK.
She has lived in Randwick for 42 years and worked as a journalist. Cr Neilson worked for Sydney’s The Weekly Times, the Randwick Rag and also Radio Eastern Sydney. She also had a spell as a shock jock on 2GB in the late 1990s.
She is only the third female mayor of Randwick since 1859, something she says she is incredibly proud of. Her deputy mayor is Labor’s Danny Said.
“Randwick has a bright future under this new team and I feel confident that council will continue to be a strong leader in local government and will serve the community well,” she said.
“I look forward to the challenges of the coming year, and I will ensure that I will be accessible and available.”
