A scooter rider with an overseas driver’s licence who was caught riding in The Ponds with two passengers has told police he was ‘unaware of the rules’.
Quakers Hill Police say the 67-year-old man was riding a scooter on Wentworth St just before 3pm on Thursday, September 19, when he was caught carrying a woman and young child as pillion passengers.
Police say the passengers were the man’s wife, aged 59, and his six-year-old grandson. The woman was not wearing a helmet.
When pulled over by police, the man produced an Indian driver’s licence and told officers he had recently returned from overseas and was “unaware of the rules”.
He was issued fines worth more than $1000 for three infringements, including: riding with a passenger without a helmet, riding with a passenger aged under eight years not in a sidecar and riding with more than one passenger.
He was also hit with nine demerit points.
The man’s wife was fined $344 for not wearing a helmet but was not issued any demerit points.
Quakers Hill Police Area Command Detective Chief Inspector Brett Guyatt denounced the rider’s actions.
“Police discourage any actions similar to this,” Detective Chief Inspector Guyatt said.
“He was not only a danger to his passengers but to others, and we want to make sure people wear the correct safety equipment and do not do anything similar to this.
He said not being aware of the road rules was not an excuse.
“All road users have an obligation to be aware of the road rules in Australia. This is never accepted as an excuse.”
