Rouse Hill hammer thrower Alex Hulley crowned Female Junior athlete of the Year

ALEX Hulley’s memorable 2016 season has been crowned b the prestigious Female Junior Athlete of the Year honour by Athletics Australia.

ALEX Hulley’s memorable 2016 season has been crowned b the prestigious Female Junior Athlete of the Year honour by Athletics Australia.

The 19-year-old Rouse Hill star has been in the form of her life, not only smashing the Australian under-20 hammer throwing record (65.75m) but capturing the silver medal at the 2016 IAAF World U-20 Championships in Bydgoszcz, Poland.

Hulley’s throw of 63.47m, provided Australia with its first ever hammer throwing medal at this level, with the previous being fourth by Gabrielle Neighbour in 2002.

“I feel very honoured to be named the best junior female athlete in Australia” Hulley said.

“It gives me confidence knowing that my hard work in training and the results are beginning to be noticed by others.

“There is a lot of sacrifice in training up to eight times a week and I also have a number of sessions at NSWIS at Homebush.”

The two-time winner of the Rouse Hill Times Junior sports Star received her honour at the recent 2016 Athletics Australia Awards at the Sydney Olympic Park.

Unbeaten in different age groups for several years, Hulley is highly rated by the Athletics NSW who called her “the finest young Australian hammer thrower in history”.

Hulley, who previously excelled at netball before being urged to try out at hammer throwing by a coach, has already set herself higher standards this year by throwing 64.25m to win the silver medal at the 2017 Athletics Australian Championships at the beginning of April.

Hulley, who studies at the Australian Catholic University, has qualified for the World University Games in Taiwan from August 19-30.

However, she needs the go ahead from her coaches Karyne Di Marco and Breanne Clement and AA’s high performance team to compete there because her main target is the 2018 Gold Coast Commonwealth Games from April 4-15.
