Zak Gaynor faces court charged over Leonay death

A 25-year-old man has faced court over the tragic death of a 63-year-old woman in western Sydney.

Zak Edward Gaynor faced Penrith Local Court this afternoon charged with the tragic death of a 63-year-old woman in Leonay.

A man who police allege lost control of his vehicle before killing a 63-year-old woman has been remanded in custody.

Zak Edward Gaynor, 25, of Pemulwuy, did not appear during a brief mention in Penrith Local Court on Wednesday morning.

Police will allege Gaynor was travelling along The River Rd in Leonay when his silver Kia Rio crossed over to the wrong side of the road, mounted the kerb, and hit 63-year-old Kathleen Young.

He was also allegedly found with a small amount of cannabis.

Ms Young went into cardiac arrest after the collision and died at the scene.

Gaynor was taken to Nepean Hospital for mandatory testing following the incident, and was later charged with dangerous driving occasioning death, negligent driving occasioning death, not keep left of the dividing line, and possession of a prohibited drug.

Gaynor’s lawyer Bryan Wrench did not apply for bail before Magistrate Brian van Zuylen, but flagged a bail application for next Friday.

He also did not enter a plea.

Magistrate van Zuylen said the matters were strictly indictable, and ordered a brief of evidence to be served by June 26.

Gaynor will next appear in court on May 8 for his bail application.
