St Clair: Nathan Chatimba pleads not guilty to murder

A man who police allege stabbed a 34-year-old man to death in a St Clair front yard in 2018 was back in court today.

A man accused of stabbing another man to death in the front yard of a St Clair home in August, 2018, will be arraigned for trial next month.

Nathan Chatimba appeared before Magistrate Geoffrey Hiatt via audiovisual link in Penrith Local Court today on charges of murder and assault occasioning actual bodily harm.

Police will allege a fight broke out between Nathan Chatimba and 34-year-old Peni Apikotoa on Dutch Pl, St Clair, at about 6.40pm on August 11, 2018.

Chatimba allegedly stabbed Mr Apikotoa during the fight. Mr Apikotoa died on the front lawn a short time later.

Police will also allege Chatimba injured a former partner during the incident.

He was arrested two hours after the incident at a home on Bellini Pl.

Chatimba today entered pleas of not guilty to charges of murder and assault occasioning actual bodily harm.

His lawyer applied for an arraignment in the Supreme Court on April 3, saying he wanted to expedite the matter as the Supreme Court was listing trials in November.

The prosecution described the matter as “complex”, saying extensive material needed to be furnished, and requested an arraignment date of April 17.

Magistrate Hiatt granted the prosecution’s request, committing Chatimba for an arraignment in the Supreme Court on April 17.

Chatimba also pleaded not guilty to a charge of driving a motor vehicle while disqualified. He will face a hearing on June 24.
