A new trend offering up a smashing good time could soon arrive in western Sydney, with plans put forward for a “smash room” in Jamisontown.

Designed as being a safe and fun environment to let off steam, smashrooms invite guests to pick up a baseball bat and don some protective gear before letting loose and smashing various objects such as ceramics, glasses and electronics.

The trend’s origins can be traced back to Japan following the global financial crisis as a way for redundant employees to channel their anger and since then has built up a slow but steady following across the world.

The team behind bringing the dream to western Sydney are soon-to-be-married couple Katrina Keshishian and Robert Hardcastle who have lodged an application with Penrith council to open up “Smash Stuff” at 37-39 York Road, Jamisontown.

The duo, who are also business owners of Axe Throw were inspired by success smash rooms have earnt overseas.

“Overseas smash rooms are offered as a form of therapy for people to let their anger out instead of bottling it up.” Said Mr Hardcastle

“So if you’ve had a bad day come along and vent out your frustration in one of our smash rooms.”

As well as having designated smashing rooms “Smash Stuff” would also have a room for craft and paint based activities and a games arcade.

They also hope to offer guests the option to smash bottles filled with colourful dust to create an Insta-worthy photo opportunity.

A Penrith local, Mr Hardcastle is excited at the prospect of opening up another venue in the area, a place he says is rich in opportunity.

“Around here there is so much potential for new forms of entertainment, it’s such a large catchment. Why go all the way to the city for a fun day out?” He said.

A development application for Smash Stuff is currently before Penrith Council, if approved the venue is expected to be open by Christmas.
