At 12.15pm on Friday the man received a call from an unknown person claiming to be from a major telephone company and told him his computer had been hacked. The caller then instructed him to purchase $4000 in Google cards for the issue to be fixed. After purchasing the cards the man became suspicious and stopped answering the calls, and he did not hand over the serial numbers for the cards. He called his telephone provider, which told him that no calls had been made from them.
