Four years after it was first promised at the 2015 State Election, construction has begun on Jordan Springs Primary School.

The new school on Cullen Ave will provide 28 classrooms, a library, school hall and outdoor learning spaces.

It is expected the school will have an initial enrolment of 600, but will be able to accommodate up to 1000 students in the future.

The initial timeline provided by the State Government stated that the school was hoped to be open and accepting students by the start of 2019.

Londonderry state Labor MP Prue Car has been one of the driving forces behind campaigning for the school and said the delay has been unfortunate.

“Before the 2015 election the then Treasurer made a commitment that Jordan Springs Primary School would be completed in the last term of Government,” Ms Car said.

“It is unfortunate that we are only now seeing construction begin, when local families have been forced to send their children to other schools in the Penrith region.

“The State Government should prioritise the construction of this school and ensure it is up and running as soon as possible.”

The biggest benefactors from the new school will be the families of the area, many of which have been calling for a school for years.

Little Zak’s Academy is located across the road from the proposed school and staff at the preschool said the news of construction has come as a great relief to parents.

“I know parents have been waiting a long time for it to happen, even before we had finished building we were told it was going to open pretty soon,” Nominated Supervisor Leanne Gill said.

“At the moment kids are going to schools out of the area and it is just further travel for parents, so it will be nice to just have something local because the majority of our parents do live in Jordan Springs,” Ms Gill said.

“Now after all this talk it is actually coming, which has put a lot of our families at ease knowing that their child will have a school to go to in the local area.”

Construction is expected to be completed in late 2020, with the first enrolment expected to take place in 2021.

It is not known at this stage when enrolments will open for the school.
