The $1.8 billion project will connect western Sydney with the new airport at Badgerys Creek. The two lane motorway will link the M7 at Cecil Hills to the Northern Rd at Luddenham, providing a direct access to the airport. The 16km road will be toll free.

Within the EIS, the report states that approximately 40 homes and 74 hectares of native vegetation will need to be acquired for the project.

The Property Council of Australia welcomed the release of the EIS, however said the delivery would require the support of stakeholders.

“The M12 is more than just a road to the airport — it’s the east-west spine for the aerotropolis precinct and an important step in unlocking the employment generating capacity of Western Sydney.” Ross Grove, PCA’s Western Sydney Regional Director said.

“The delivery of a well-connected, well-supported city in the vast expanse between Penrith and Liverpool requires the co-operation and inclusion of every stakeholder along the way.”

Shadow Minister for Western Sydney, Greg Warren, said he was aware of residents’ concerns around the acquisition of homes.

“I am aware of the anxious and uncertainty that residents around the construction area are feeling,” Mr Warren said.

“I would hope that the government would consult with residents appropriately, but lack of consultation is what this government is notorious for.”

The latest budget shows an extra $400 million has been allocated to the project to cover the increase in land and property values around the construction site.

The motorway will begin construction in 2022 and is expected to be open by 2025, one year before the first plane at Western Sydney Airport takes off.

NSW Planning Minister Rob Stokes said the M12 will provide more than just easier transport access.

“The new airport will boost investment and growth opportunities by better connecting Western Sydney to international businesses, students and tourists across the globe,” Mr Stokes said.

“We are working with the Federal Government to ensure that road and transport infrastructure is in place, to better connect the region to the rest of Sydney before the first plane takes off.”
