Penrith high schools have finished with fantastic results in 2019 NAPLAN testing, with three in the top 100 in NSW.

Penrith Selective High School was the best school in the region with an average of 663.7, enough to give them the 16th highest average in NSW.

The school’s numeracy results were particularly impressive, as Year 7 scored 705 and Year 9 scored 720.

Montgrove College and Wollemi College also had averages of more than 590 to finish inside the top 100 schools in the state.

Private schools outperformed public schools in the region, with 10 of the top 12 schools being independently run.

The bottom eight schools in the region were all public schools, however all but one finished with an average higher than 500.

Only three were not inside the top 700 schools in the state.

Penrith Selective High School principal Mark Long said he was “really happy” with the results.

“We’ve had a significant improvement around literacy which is off the back of a two-year targeted program to increase the kids’ skills,” he said.

“They come in with a high level, but this program allows them to engage with a wide range of texts to broaden the material they’re reading, and these results have captured that.”

Mr Long said while NAPLAN results were “always interesting” they couldn’t be given too much weight.

“We know it’s a snapshot at one point in time,” he said.

“It’s helpful through that lens, but it’s not the only tool we use – there’s a range of other ways we know students grow and learn.

“NAPLAN’s going to change, and we’ve known that for a long time it’s had a ceiling on gifted students.

“We’re excited about the new-look NAPLAN that will capture authentic student achievements.”
