A Sydney TikToker crashed into two cars while driving on a suspended licence, later telling police he “just really needed to get to work”.

Kevin Achampong, 23, known as ‘Kevpongg’ on TikTok, appeared at Downing Centre Local Court on Friday having previously pleaded guilty to driving while suspended.

According to agreed facts tendered to court, the St Mary’s man was driving his 2005 silver Mitsubishi Colt about 3.30am on December 17 on Victoria Rd, Rozelle when he collided with the passenger side of a silver Toyota Camry which was heading in the same direction.

After crashing into the Toyota, Achampong’s car then hit a stationary white Hino 500 truck which was conducting roadworks.

The owners of the exchanged details, where Achampong revealed he was suspended and police were called.

Police arrived a short time later and confirmed Achampong’s licence had been suspended from November 4 until February 3, 2023.

Achampong was placed under arrest and cautioned where he confirmed to police he was suspended, further saying “I think it [started] maybe last month”.

When asked why he was driving, the TikToker said “I just really needed to get to work”.

In court, Achampong’s lawyer Mr Sinadinovic said his client “apologies for the matter”, explaining “he submits he did the wrong thing”.

“He said if he had made a better decision on the day to not drive, then he wouldn’t have had to waste … police and court time,” Mr Sinadinovic said.

The court heard Achampong is nine months off completing a health science diploma from Western Sydney University, and works two jobs.

In sentencing the 23-year-old, Magistrate Ian Guy said the “aggravating” factor of the matter was the crash which led police to finding Achampong’s licence was suspended.

Despite saying the traffic offenders program wasn’t “a magical wand”, Magistrate Guy implored Achampong to finish off the remainder of the course.

He was ultimately convicted, fined $500 and disqualified for three months.

Achampong is widely known on TikTok for his point of view videos and comedy sketches, garnering 638,000 followers on the app.
