Penrith could soon be home to a new camping and four-wheel driving store under plans lodged with Penrith Council.
The application lodged last week would see a branch of the 4WD Supacentre open in a currently empty warehouse near the corner of Batt St and Mulgoa Rd, Jamisontown.
The proposed site envelopes an existing 7/11 service station on Mulgoa Rd.
The store would be within 500 metres of existing similar stores Anaconda and Boating Camping Fishing.
A planner from Cityscape Planning and Projects said the $20,000 project seeks to “provide storage, display and sale of four wheel drive accessories and associated camping goods”.
He also said the development does not propose any physical works to the unit but does propose some internal work, including partitions, a sales counter, a new staffroom, and display shelves and racks in the showroom area.
“The site has recently been approved and developed for industrial development and has not been occupied or used since that time,” he said.
“The development does not seek to change the industrial land use of the site and no ground disturbance will occur as part of the development.
“It is not of a scale that could be considered to have any significant impact upon the economy of the local area, however it will generate several new local employment opportunities.”
The planner said the existing site is more than suitable for the store, and said there was “good reason” for council to approve the plans.
“The subject site is located within an urban environment and is appropriately zoned and well serviced by infrastructure necessary to support the proposed use,” he said.
“It presents no demands that are beyond the servicing capacities of available infrastructure and will not create any amenity impacts beyond that are already experienced with the local industrial environment.”
