A helping hand in the kitchen
Penrith’s Dylan Cutmore plans to open his own restaurant one day. Thanks to Rotary he is one step closer to achieving his goal.

For as long as I can remember, I have always dreamt of being a chef and now, thanks to TAFE NSW and The Rotary Club of Penrith I’m one step closer to achieving that dream.
Growing up, I discovered that school wasn’t really for me and left at the end of year 11.
After a couple of tough years, I decided it was time to get back on my feet and pursue a career in something that I loved — cooking.
I’d always enjoyed experimenting with food, trying different flavours and creating dishes that I was proud of.
So when I discovered that TAFE NSW Nepean offered a Certificate III in Commercial Cookery I took my chances and enrolled. It is the best thing that I have ever done.
Because I spend my time at TAFE NSW Nepean learning and working in the kitchens, I need my own utensils and a uniform, just like a real chef has.
As I am very tight on funds I wasn’t able to purchase the things that other students have. This is where The Rotary Club of Penrith have really helped me out.
I was lucky enough to be one of three students who received the $500 Rotary Scholarship at the Inaugural Rotary Awards to go towards my studies.
I’ll be putting this money straight towards some brand new cooking equipment and I was going to buy a new chef’s uniform as mine is a bit worn for wear, but Rotary has been kind enough to buy that for me.
Over the past eight months, I’ve really gotten back on my feet. I have a job at Jack Little’s Café which I love and now thanks to this scholarship and TAFE NSW I’m on track to master the skills I need to one day open my own restaurant.
