Whether you are black, white or beige, a new children’s show created in Penrith teaches the audience about tolerance and acceptance .

Lynsey Mackay is a professional singer and vocal teacher and can now add Sydney Fringe Festival show creator to her list of credentials.

She wrote kaleidoscope a children’s show which will feature in next month’s festival and is a narrated storyline starring children from Penrith and surrounding areas singing, dancing and performing circus acts.

The storyline follows the colours living in the kaleidoscope.

The black, white and grey characters are the story’s protagonists and it has a twist when they take the rest of the colours hostage.

Ms Mackay said the main theme of the show is anti-bullying, a message the mother said needs closer attention.

“The underlying theme is anti-bullying and that we should be kind to each other and not judge by appearance,” Ms Mackay said

“Children are so vulnerable and you hear all these stories in the media about the rates of child suicide and bullying online, so I think it is really important to start teaching them young about tolerance.

“I thought it would be good to spread that message using the creative arts. “

Ms Mackay said she is excited by the prospect of featuring in one of Sydney’s biggest performing arts festival, but acknowledges it is a daunting prospect.

“It is really exciting to have been offered to showcase the show at the Fringe Festival, but it is also a bit scary,” she said.

“I also like to expose children to different styles of music and I often think children’s shows can be very cliche with fairytales and the same style of music.”

When selling the show to potential audience members, Ms Mackay said it is “the perfect show for the whole family to enjoy”.

kaleidoscope will play at the Hurtsville Entertainment Centre on September 21 and 22.
