From spell-casting wizards to crime-fighting superheroes, princesses and four-legged friends, Sydney schoolchildren were transformed into their favourite characters this week.

Costumes, face paint and a bit of theatrical flare came together as students around Sydney put their best literary foot forward for Book Week.

The annual national Book Week kicked off on Monday with schools, preschools, libraries and playgroups across the country hosting parades.

Across The Hills, Parramatta and western Sydney, children and their families put their creativity to the test in an array of colourful costumes representing a wide range of characters.

Goosebumps, Where’s Wally, Harry Potter and Marvel characters were popular this year while sports from motocross to netball and football also had a chance to shine.
