Tallest towers planned in O’Connell St, Parramatta to rival Meriton’s
He had a vision to create two new massive residential towers in western Sydney — forecast to be the region’s largest buildings — but Harry Triguboff’s Meriton plans may be overshadowed by another proposal for Parramatta.

Development mogul Harry Triguboff had a vision to create the tallest residential tower in western Sydney — but his plans could be short-lived if another proposal is given the green light next week.
A consortium of small business owners of a low-rise commercial building at 2 O’Connell St, Parramatta, have revealed a long-term multimillion-dollar plan for a 69-storey mixed use development — three storeys taller than Meriton’s plans for 180 George St, Parramatta.
Meriton received the tick of approval by the Sydney Central City Planning Panel at a meeting on October 9 for the construction of two $322 million record-breaking skyscrapers for the banks of the Parramatta River — just a few hundred metres from western Sydney’s current tallest residential building, Meriton’s Altitude.
However, the 53 small business owners that make up the 2 O’Connell St proposal are expecting a voluntary planning agreement to be approved by Parramatta Council on Monday night.
Strata renewal chair, Arthur Inglis, said the proposal has been in the pipeline since 2015.
“This site is an old 1980s walk-up with 63 units and 53 different owners,” Mr Inglis said.
The planning proposal includes a plan for a 69-storey residential tower and a neighbouring 11-storey mixed use development with three stories of commercial space.
“Once completed, this will be the tallest building in western Sydney, three storeys taller than Harry Triguboff’s plans for 180 George St,” he said.
“We are not competing with Meriton and their location on the river, we will provide quality accommodation at the entrance to Westfield and Parramatta station.”
Mr Inglis said Parramatta Council’s vision for tall slender towers, which allow more public open space, was the influence for their proposal.
The site will not be developed by the small business consortium, instead sold off to a private developer.
