An 18-year-old man who was allegedly doing burnouts in a Chrysler before it was set ablaze atop a Parramatta CBD carpark is assisting police with inquiries.
Fire and Rescue NSW firefighters were faced “with a challenging car fire” on the top level of a multistorey Parramatta Station Carpark at Parramatta on Monday night.
The Parramatta crew rushed to Wentworth St just before 9pm amid reports of a vehicle exploding on the ninth floor of the carpark.
“The black Chrysler’s fuel tank had ruptured, the resulting flames driven up to four metres into the air by the blast and strong winds,’’ a NSW Fire and Rescue statement said.
Firefighters were forced to carry their equipment up the stairs to the rooftop where they spent 40 minutes extinguishing the flames.
The cause of the blaze is considered suspicious.
A NSW Police spokeswoman said Parramatta officers were called out after a driver was allegedly doing burnouts before the car was set on fire.
“An 18-year-old man was located at the scene and he is assisting police with their inquiries,’’ she said.
