A wave of nostalgia swept over Parramatta when Eels legend turned successful entrepreneur Peter Wynn announced last week he would relocate his sports shop after 35 years in Church St.
But loyal customers need not worry – a new jersey or pair of sneakers is just 50m away at Centenary Square, still in the heart of Parramatta.
The official address of 83 Macquarie St was home to the ANZ Bank before Jamie Oliver’s Italian Restaurant and Matt Moran’s Chophouse opened but failed to last long in Parramatta’s dining scene.
Wynn laughs when told of how the location is cursed when it comes to restaurateurs.
But he has a legion of sports fans and loyal customers sure to snap the run of bad luck for businesses trading in the CBD location.
“It’s been vacant for a while,’’ Wynn said.
“It’s good, such a good outlook, overlooking Centenary Square.
“I just think we kept a missed opportunity when people walk down on game day, it’s just wide, open spaces.’’
The double-storey shop, which will house jerseys and online purchases downstairs and shoes on the upper floor, opens on Tuesday and will be a “pop-up” business trading simultaneously with the original shop until the new business is fitted out properly in time for the NRL season kick off.
Just over 500sq m, the premises is slightly smaller than the original 675sq m store.
News of the original store’s relocation stoked a frenzy of bargain hunting for those snapping up discounted goods, or those who popped in to chat to Wynn.
“People came from a long way away, I was quite humbled,’' he said.
“People came from Wollongong, people came from Perth.
“It was quite amazing.’’
Peter Wynn’s Score and Culture Kings, which is heading to Westfield, were forced to relocate to make way for the five-star InterContinental Hotel, which is due to open in 2025.
