Parramatta: Allity plans aged care home for 28 Glebe St

A decision has been made on a western Sydney nursing home that critics described as too dense. Find out the outcome.

An aged care centre has been approved for Parramatta despite objectors expressed concerns about its hospital-like design and height imposing on their homes.

Parramatta local planning panel unanimously approved Allity co/ Midson aged care centre’s plans lodged for 28 Glebe St — where the existing Brentwood Nursing Home stands.

The centre, opposite Ollie Webb Reserve, will have 100 beds, 24 car spaces and a hair salon.

At a panel meeting last week, Marsden St resident Anthony Sadek criticised the four-storey centre’s crowded design and called for more landscaping.

“How would you feel having to live the remaining days of your life in a hospital-like environment?,’’ he said.

Opponents say the aged care home is too much like a hospital.

“This proposal should not be set as a precedent for the future development of nursing homes.

“I always have been in favour of a new nursing home being built behind me, because I eventually would like to go into it, but I’d like it to be more landscape-friendly and not so dense and hospital-like as in this proposal.’’

Mr Sadek said he was also concerned about the centre causing overshadowing and how it would impact heritage-listed properties such as his family’s home.

Ethos Urban director Tom Goode, who spoke on behalf of Allity, said the plans had gone through several changes under the expertise of the design excellence panel.

The building breached height limits by 3.24m but Mr Goode said the height now complied with the council guidelines and the top floor was converted from beds into a common room to allay privacy concerns. The Glebe St frontage was also reduced.

The development has been before the council since June last year and drew a 19-signature petition objecting to the plans.

The panel gave the nursing home the green light after determining it would be compatible with the future character of the area, it is permissible under the R4 zoning and it will provide housing and employment.
