North Parramatta: Man, 24, stabbed at Isabella St unit block

Detectives say it is ‘very, very lucky’ they are not investigating a homicide after a man was stabbed in a bloodied attack in a western Sydney unit block where neighbours helped save his life.

Police are hunting for a person or group of people who stabbed a 24-year-old man multiple times inside his North Parramatta unit block at Isabella St on Tuesday night.

Emergency services descended on the home about 7pm where they found the man with multiple stab wounds to his upper torso, hands legs and buttock.

Parramatta Detective Chief Inspector Thomas Barnes said two residents bravely responded to calls for assistance until an ambulance arrived and took him to hospital, where he is in intensive care and undergoing surgery.

“That male was taken by ambulance to Westmead Hospital, where if not for the actions of the emergency services doctors, he would have more than likely lost his life,’’ Insp Barnes said.

“Based on the medical advice, the gentleman is very, very lucky that we’re not looking at a homicide investigation now.’’

Blood was found inside the unit block and in its common areas.

Insp Barnes said police seized a weapon, which was undergoing forensic analysis and was not normally “used in a domestic setting” but described it as a lock blade or camping hunting knife, “not a bread and butter or steak knife’’.

“Certainly we believe the initial incident took place inside the unit,’’ he said.

“There is blood and other forensic material inside the unit which is consistent with that and there’s also, regrettably, a large amount of blood in the common area of the unit block where the male was located.’’

Insp Barnes said the number of people potentially involved was uncertain.

“In terms of a targeted attack, the male was known to police in some capacity,’’ he said.
“However, we’re yet to establish any links between that and what occurred last night.

“We’re particularly interested in speaking to anybody who knows the male, might have associated with the male, if not at the time of the incident, certainly in the hours beforehand.”

Insp Barnes did not rule out attempted murder charges and said it was concerning the incident happened near the Only About Children childcare centre, which is opposite the crime scene.

“The childcare centre would have been closing for business only within the hour before this happened and clearly that’s not something we want to see occurring.’’
