A western Sydney mayor who was allegedly assaulted at a polling booth shortly before polls closed has learned the results of the council elections.

Physical altercation at council polling booth at Merrylands

Cumberland Mayor Steve Christou, who was allegedly assaulted at a Merrylands polling booth on election day, has been re-elected as a councillor in the Granville ward.

Footage shows the Our Local Community (OLC) representative allegedly being punched in a physical altercation at the Fowler Road School polling booth on Saturday about 5pm.

Cops interviewed several witnesses and attended a business about 10pm that night when they arrested a 29-year-old man, who was taken to Granville police station and charged with common assault.

He was given conditional bail to appear at Fairfield Court on Wednesday, January 12.

The alleged incident happened an hour before voting closed.

Voting is still occurring at the Wentworthville ward to decide the third councillor. Labor’s Suman Saha was re-elected when the party clinched 43.4 per cent of the vote and Liberal-turned-independent Michael Zaiter is returning to the chamber after gathering 26 per cent of the vote.

Labor’s best result across the local government area was in South Granville where it recorded 65.6 per cent and will see Glenn Elmore and rookie councillor Mohamad Hussein represent the party. Veteran councillor Paul Garrard was re-elected as an OLC representative.

Labor is still loved in Regents Park where Kun Huang will return alongside running mate Sabrin Farooqui after they amassed 64.5 per cent of the vote. A third councillor has not been elected.

The vote for the mayor is held separately and is determined by councillors when the new chamber next meets, which is likely to be in January.
