Critical incident declared after crash in Auburn

A teenager had to have part of his leg amputated after he was involved in a horror motorbike crash in the early hours of Thursday following a police chase in Sydney’s west.

Two teenagers, aged 18 and 16, were seen by police driving erratically on an unregistered trail bike along Homebush Bay Dr in Auburn about 2.20am. Police say the pair weren’t wearing helmets.

Officers attached to Burwood Police Area Command tried to stop the motorcyle, however the driver allegedly accelerated from the scene.

NSW Police acting assistant commissioner Adam Whyte said police officers tried to stop the motorcycle but when the driver allegedly acceslarated away, a “very short” police pursuit was initiated before being abandoned due to speed and dangerous driving.

A short time later the motorcycle was found to have collided with two taxis at the intersection of Parramatta and St Hilliers roads at Auburn.

Both riders were thrown out from the sheer force with three police officers giving first aid at the scene.

Police say it appears the motorcycle allegedly ran a red light in the moments before the collision, which left one taxi with serious damage.

Acting assistant commissioner Whyte praised the immediate efforts of the police officers at the crash scene.

“I would like it noted that the three police officers on scene administered CPR straight away and are responsible for, more than likely, saving their lives,” he said.

After being treated at the scene, the two men were transported to Westmead Hospital.

The pair are currently listed as being in a critical, but stable condition.

The drivers of each taxi were uninjured and taken to hospital for mandatory testing.

A critical incident team comprising of officers attached to Cumberland Police Area Command will now investigate the circumstances surrounding the crash.

Anyone with information about this incident is urged to contact Crime Stoppers on 1800 333 000.
