Multistorey blocks, a library and play spaces are planned for Melrose Park High School, in one of Sydney’s largest masterplanned sites slated to gain 11,000 new homes.
New plans for the high school have been released for public feedback and include specialist support classrooms, outdoor learning spaces and landscaping at 37 Hope St.
The high school is slated to be completed for the first day of term 1 in 2027 with construction to get under way in the middle of this year.
It will cater for more than 600 students when it opens and will expand to accommodate up to 1000 students, most who will live in one of the 11,000 homes in the precinct being redeveloped from industrial to a high-density residential zone.
It also coincides with the redevelopment of Melrose Park Public School, where upgrades will increase its capacity from 170 to more than 700 when it opens the same day as the high school in just under two years. Both schools are worth $125m.
It is expected the high school will only open for students in years 7 and 8 in 2027 instead of five grades.
That plan caused controversy among parents at nearby Wentworth Point High School which only opened to year 7 students this year despite the massive growth and the nearest school being Concord High.
“I would like to think lessons have been learned from Wentworth Point,’’ Parramatta Lord Mayor Martin Zaiter said.
Under existing plans, the carpark at Melrose Park High will be for staff only.
The government is undertaking a transport impact assessment which will be prepared to identify potential impacts the development generates such as as major disruption to road users, public transport commuters, cyclists and pedestrians.
A stop is planned for Melrose Park under stage 2 of the Parramatta Light Rail, which is not expected to operate until 2032.
Education and Learning Minister Prue Car said nearby the state government was opening a primary school at Midtown Macquarie Park, the Macquarie Park Education Campus, and upgrades to Dundas Public School and Parramatta East Public School.
“The Melrose Park community is continuing to grow, and our Labor government is continuing to invest in this area so every child can access high-quality public schools close to home,’’ she said.
The $5bn urban renewal precinct at Melrose Park includes the town centre and parklands.
