A man has been taken to hospital after barricading himself in a western Sydney home and allegedly threatening police officers with a nail gun.

The stand-off at the South Granville address began about 4pm on Monday when officers attached to the Cumberland Police Area Command tried to execute an arrest warrant on a 40-year-old man.

With assistance from specialist officers and the dog unit, police were able to gain entry to the home and arrest the man.

He was treated at the scene by NSW Ambulance paramedics before being taken to hospital in a stable condition for a mental health assessment.

Inquiries continue.
