Incredible flyover vision of the yet to be built Parramatta Aquatic and Leisure Centre shows exactly what 44,000 sqm of a former golf course will look like once complete.

Construction firm Lipman has been announced as the company who will build the much-anticipated $88.6 million Parramatta Aquatic and Leisure Centre on the former golf course site.

The announcement on Tuesday came as work began on the complex which will house a 10-lane 50m outdoor pool, 25m indoor pool, indoor learn-to-swim pool, indoor water playground, spa and sauna facilities, cafe, fitness centre, multipurpose community rooms, and up to 200 parking spaces over 40,000sq m.

The project was initially due to cost $77 million and jointly funded between Parramatta Council and the State Government.

However, as well as the government allocating $38.5 million under the Restart NSW Fund, the council is adding $11.6 million to increase the facility’s capacity and “future-proof it to accommodate Parramatta’s rapid growth’’.

“This is a once-in-a-generation project and we are making sure it goes the distance,’’ Parramatta Lord Mayor Bob Dwyer said.

“We are investing more to meet the growing demands of our city.

“This state-of-the art facility will be a place the people of Parramatta and Greater Sydney can enjoy for many years to come – whether to train, compete or simply to have fun with friends and family.”

The facility will be sprawled across the Mays Hill precinct on the former Parramatta Golf Club site at the corner of Pitt St and Park Pde, when it opens in early 2023.

Parramatta state Liberal MP Geoff Lee said the aquatic centre would be the envy of communities all over the state’’.

“Parramatta deserves a pool which caters for competition, learn-to-swim classes, recreation and relaxation,’’ he said.

“It will be a complex with versatility designed to meet the needs of Parramatta now and in the future for decades to come.”

Lipman CEO Rob MacKee said it wanted to make the aquatic centre “one of Sydney’s most iconic aquatic and leisure facilities and seeing it thrive for years to come’’.

“Lipman is thrilled to be delivering the Parramatta aquatic and leisure centre – a flagship project for western Sydney,’’ he said.

A total of 60,000 cubic metres of dirt will be moved during construction and more than 500 trees indigenous to the area will be planted.

The update on the project brings some relief for Parramatta swimmers who have been without an aquatic centre since the Parramatta War Memorial Swimming Pool shut in 2017 to make way for the $300 million Bankwest Stadium.

Until the Parramatta drawcard opens, swimmers can use Wentworthville Swimming Centre, which opened on Monday after a $12 million refurbishment that features an upgraded Olympic-sized pool with a lift for people with disabilities, a learn-to-swim pool, splash pad, children’s playground with a pirate ship, private change rooms and a kiosk.

Cumberland Mayor Steve Christou said the pool reopening was especially significant to fill a void while Parramatta aquatic centre was under construction.
