Angry residents are concerned a $156 million, 25-storey apartment tower at Granville would block their city skyline views and encroach on their privacy.

The Sydney Central City Planning Panel is determining the Starryland development application for the corner of Good St and Parramatta Rd where the heritage-listed, now-closed furniture shop The Barn would be demolished to make way for 373 units with 352 parking spaces.

Demolishing The Barn, built circa 1880, has been deemed necessary for the 6m widening of Parramatta Rd.

The building is heritage listed for its representation of the Victorian period of commercial buildings in the community, with an exterior that is intact and “strongly contributes to the townscape character”.

The plans for 34-142 Parramatta Rd and 26-38 Good St attracted 25 submissions and included concerns over traffic congestion, inadequate number of parks and supermarkets to cater for Granville’s population boom.

At a panel meeting on Wednesday, resident Jack Campbell objected to the development over traffic congestion, inadequate services and possible loss of city vistas from his Cowper St unit.

He also criticised the shortfall of parking spaces to match the “642 bedrooms’’ and increasing traffic in the “already very congested’’ neighbourhood.

“Roads are congested and there’s only one local supermarket,’' he said, adding there were no entertainment venues to support the influx of residents.

However, a spokeswoman for the applicant said no more than 352 parking spaces were planned in an effort to control traffic congestion.

She said there would be several common areas in the tower to use for work, exercise or social gatherings, and shops to cater for residents in the complex.

“There’s also a large development happening in the other end of Cowper St which is delivering a supermarket,’’ she said.

At outcome from the panel meeting will be revealed next week.
