A 346-apartment complex in Merrylands is slated to be a buzzing food and beverage precinct to revitalise the suburb’s main street, and developers say it will be more appealing to residents priced out of Parramatta and Westmead.
Apartments at Coronation Property’s Mason and Main complex at 249-259 Merrylands Rd which is part of the Merrylands town centre overhaul, will begin selling off the plan from Saturday.
The development, where Red Rooster once stood, comprises high-end retail and a gourmet marketplace, supermarket and a dining precinct on the ground floor while residents will have a private swimming pool and gym in their building.
Coronation director Aras Labutis said the blue ribbon location, opposite Stockland shopping centre, and close to Parramatta, was being developed in a suburb where the population was forecast to grow by 1.32 per cent each year until 2036 — higher than the rest of the Cumberland local government area.
“Coronation Property is focused on delivering projects in the region that address the lack of supply for high-quality apartment living for workers who have been priced out of Parramatta and Westmead,’’ he said.
He said it would also appeal to current residents.
“The people of Merrylands are very proud of their community and love where they live.
“Mason and Main delivers the option to stay in the community they love and be part of a premium brand-new development.”
The development has been likened to Liverpool’s Paper Mill Food development which has won multiple urban renewal awards.
But the development is part of the five-tower Merrylands Court complex, which Mayor Steve Christou dubbed “overkill’’ when 228 extra units were added to plans in April, taking the total to 790 apartments. The tallest tower in the complex will soar to 25 storeys.
At the time Cr Christou voiced opposition to the number of family-sized units and said he would advocate for extra infrastructure including public transport, footpaths, and green space to support new developments.
The Woods Bagot Architects and Interiors-designed apartments will comprise 31 studio units, 145 one-bedroom units, 151 two-bedrooms, seven with three bedrooms and eight penthouses.
Construction will start in the first half of 2022 and completion is expected 24 months later.
