Fifty apartments have been scrapped for the landmark Sanctuary development at Wentworth Point so a childcare centre for 110 children can occupy the space at the waterfront development and fill a major void instead.

Under an amended development application lodged with Parramatta Council, developer Sekisui House has proposed the massive childcare centre on the ground and first floors of the Hill Rd complex.

There is just one childcare centre, Mini Masterminds, at Wentworth Point and the demand has long outstripped the supply in the suburb, which has a population of more than 13,000.

Since 2016, census data calculations conducted by Westpac showed the gap between supply and demand has dropped from 512 places at Wentworth Point in 2021.

Resident Mark Green welcomed plans for another facility.

“We’re desperate for childcare centres down here,’’ he said.

“There’s a tiny, private one – it might be 60 or 90 places but given the number of residents there’s obviously a massive shortfall.’’

Fellow resident Heba Aly, who has two primary-school aged children and runs a sports program for youngsters opposite Marina Square, agreed.

“I feel like we need it because the ones in Rhodes don’t have a spot for Wentworth Point kids and the ones opposite the primary school (Mini Masterminds) is not enough for kids because we’re a growing community.’’

A planning document said the service would also assist more female workforce participation.

“The assessment provides that whilst there are childcare centres in this catchment, there is a significant under supply of child care places within Wentworth Point,’’ it stated.

“The assessment concludes that the proposed childcare centre is considered economically supportable and will play an important role in addressing the shortfall in childcare facilities in the catchment area.’’

Along with the childcare centre, the change at Sanctuary means the number of units would drop from 537 to 487 over two blocks that reach 32 and 39 storeys.

There will be 657 car spaces for residents and 28 allocated for the childcare centre.

The podium would also be reconfigured from four to five storeys.

In total, the Sanctuary development features 1797 apartments ranging from two to 40 storeys, a civic plaza and a 3.2 hectare neighbourhood park.
