A CARLINGFORD mother who set fire to properties while she was her afternoon school run will remain behind bars until at least May.

Yasmin Moon, 47, was sentenced to 3½ years in jail, with a non-parole period of two years and five months after she set fireto a property in Eighth Ave, Carlingford, in November 2016.

The fire frightened residents and destroyed a brush fence outside one home and fences and a window in another. Residents ofnearby Alan Walker Village retirement home were evacuated but no-one was hurt.

Police arrested Moon in December 2016 following an investigation which included officers canvassing homes throughout the neighbourhood.

Moon was out on bail and awaiting sentence for eight other fires when she was arrested.

She was behind a series of fires that plagued the neighbourhood over the course of 18 months.

The fires were mostly lit on brush fences outside homes in Brooklyn Cres, Freeman Place and Madison Ave at Carlingford and Broadway Circuit at Epping.

Police suspect her of lighting as many as 40 fires.

It is believed Moon lit the fires on her way to the local primary school to pick up her children and would survey the damageas she returned home.

During her trial Moon pleaded not guilty to the arson.

Moon has been in jail since December 2016.

She is expected to be eligible for release in May, 2019.
