Gladesville: ‘I was pretty sure that everyone must have been dead’

A MAN appeared in court today after being released from hospital following a four-vehicle crash in Gladesville on Sunday.

A Rhodes man involved in a four-vehicle crash in Gladesville on Sunday has been refused bail in court.

Remarkably, no-one died in the crash which saw five people taken to hospital following the incident on Victoria Rd.

Qiaochu Lu, 26, from Rhodes, was arrested after being released from hospital on Tuesday.

He was refused bail at Newtown Local Court on Wednesday and his case will be mentioned again at Central Local Court next week.

He has been charged with two counts of dangerous driving occasioning grievous bodily harm among other offences.

Police believe he was driving a BMW M4 west on Victoria Rd while three other vehicles were travelling east, near Westminster Rd, about 7.30pm on Sunday.

Police allege the BMW failed to negotiate a left-hand bend and collided with the three vehicles.

Resident Steve Lucas said he arrived home shortly after the incident and the crash happened outside his home.

He spoke with a victim, an Uber driver, involved in the crash.

“I went and had a look and saw the fire engines, ambulance and police there and a guy standing out the front of my place.

“He said he was in the car at the front and got hit by the BMW.”

Mr Lucas said the man had scratches and cuts to his head but said he was okay. Mr Lucas said he was amazed no-one was killed.

“I was pretty sure that everyone must have been dead the cars were so bad.

“It is a miracle that anyone survived it.”

Mr Lucas said the driver of the BMW must have crossed the median strip in the middle of the road.

“He went over the median strip … he would have been launched through the air like a missile.”

Mr Lu has been charged with two counts of dangerous driving occasioning grievous bodily harm, cause bodily harm by misconduct in charge of a motor vehicle, and negligent driving occasioning grievous bodily harm.

A passenger inside a VW Polo, a 47-year-old man from Minchinbury, was in the worst condition following the crash.

He was taken to Royal North Shore Hospital suffering a lacerated spleen and fracture to the pelvis but was in a stable condition on Wednesday.

The driver of the VW, a 42-year-old woman from Drummoyne, was also taken to Royal North Shore Hospital with a fractured forearm requiring surgery and fracture to her left ankle, lumbar spinal damage and small bleed on the brain. She was also in a stable condition on Wednesday.

The driver of a Toyota Corolla, a 31-year-old woman from Lane Cove, was taken to the same hospital with seatbelt injuries and possible abdominal injuries.

The driver of a Ford Focus, a 47-year-old man from Guildford, was taken to Ryde Hospital where he was cleared of any serious injury and has since been discharged from hospital.

Mr Lu was taken to hospital with a possible neck injury but was released on Tuesday.

Police are urging anyone with information in relation to the crash to contact Crime Stoppers on 1800 333 000.
