Car engine causes fire at Stockland Merrylands shopping centre

A driver should probably have bought a lottery ticket when she entered a western Sydney shopping centre after her car engine exploded while she was in the mall.

Investigations are under way about what caused a fire to rip through an unoccupied car parked at Stockland Merrylands carpark on Tuesday afternoon.

Cumberland police chief inspector Rick Agius said two people, including a security guard, were taken to Westmead Hospital after inhaling powder from the shopping centre’s fire extinguishers when they attempted to douse the blaze.

Inspector Agius said the 68-year-old woman who owned the Peugeot 207 2007 hatchback was not near the car when the engine bay ignited shortly before 4pm at the ground level carpark.

The fire is not being treated as suspicious.
