Whether you prefer a snifter of port, or to wet your whistle with a nice cold beer, there are plenty of places in the northern suburbs for a beverage. Alcohol, like all things should be taken in moderation, and a culture of binge drinking should certainly give many pause for thought before partaking. For those drinking responsibly a favourite local drinking spot is like a favourite restaurant or coffee spot, well frequented and one with which you are fiercely loyal. The Governor, Macquarie Park
The newest addition to Macquarie Park’s night-life, The Governor opened on Waterloo Rd last year. Choose from a booth or table at the spacious downstairs pub for bistro fare and a range of drinks or head upstairs to sleek bar Ess for cocktails and Japanese share plates.
Hunters Hill Hotel
Fans love the regular weekday food specials, Thursday poker nights and the children’s entertainment on Saturday nights and Sunday afternoons. Hunters Hill Hotel has a solid wine list and a good range of cocktails too, plus a contemporary bistro menu where you can get a quinoa and kale salad or a gluten free pizza alongside chicken schnitzels, steaks, and pork ribs.
West Ryde Hotel
With a reading corner by the fireplace, regular specials in the bistro, Tuesday night trivia and a range of popular beers on tap, West Ryde Hotel is a warm and welcoming local spot perfect for those nights when you want a quiet drink.
The Bayview Hotel
This Gladesville pub always has something happening, from the regular Comedy Circuit nights that attract a who’s who of Australian comedy to the live music on Friday and Saturday nights, karaoke on Wednesdays, trivia on Thursdays, and food specials throughout the week. The Bayview’s extensive menu includes a range of burgers, pizzas and poke bowls as well as the bistro classics. The cocktail list includes all the classics as well as solid wine list to choose from.
Woolwich Pier Hotel
The iconic hotel underwent extensive renovations last year and has a fresh new look with a nod to its heritage. It has three dining spots; a brasserie, the casual bar, and an upstairs space with a wraparound balcony. The menu is an eclectic mix of French/Japanese, with confit duck sitting alongside beef taktaki and miso salmon, and cocktails are the specialty with a range of almost-too-pretty-to-drink options.
Eastwood Hotel
In the heart of Eastwood near the train station is the spacious hotel with an outdoor beer garden and the popular Korean eatery Jean’s Chilli Chicken. The drinks list at The Eastwood includes a range of flavours of the Korean spirit soju along with cocktails, beer and wine.
The Ranch, North Ryde
North Ryde’s local family-friendly pub offers something to do most nights of the week. There’s karaoke, live music, trivia and plenty of children’s entertainment plus all the big matches are screened in their sports bar. The Ranch’s outdoor terrace is a great spot to enjoy a drink while the warm weather is still around.
