When it comes to the athletics field, 10 year old Nathan Barbara is a natural.

The St Anthony’s, Marsfield student has represented his school multiple times in a number of events while he also finished 12th in the state for discus at the NSW PSSA Athletics Competition in October.

Nathan is also a double amputee who competes with prosthetic legs.

Along with his sister Isabella, Nathan joined Ryde Little Athletics this year and has already become a favourite among the club.

“Nathan’s positive attitude towards life was apparent upon my initial meeting with him,” said Ryde Little Athletics’ Officer for Publicity and Public Relations, Sandra Prizmic.

“(He) competes with great determination and bravery. He is not put off by difficulties. He is a brave young man and is extremely inspiring to others.

“It has been a great pleasure while out on the track to witness the great sportsmanship displayed towards Nathan by other athletes, both in his own age group as well as athletes from other age groups.”

Upon learning of Nathan’s passion for athletics, his family was personally urged to sign him up by club president David Sunderland.

Sunderland modified the athletics program to suit Nathan’s needs.

“Ryde Athletics feels privileged that Nathan has decided to register at Ryde,” Ms Prizmic said.

“The Ryde Athletics community welcomes Nathan and his family and hopes that Nathan continues this athletics journey at Ryde for many more years to come.”
