A Sydney doctor who spent more than eight hours drinking in the wine and food destination of Orange got behind the wheel four times over the legal limit and slammed into a guard rail.

Hunters Hill doctor Amelia Rosemary Denniss, 31, pleaded guilty to high range drink driving after the May 13 crash in her car at the intersection of Pinnacle and Stairs roads where she was the sole occupant in her car.

The 8.10pm crash followed wine testing from 11am until 7.30pm, with police facts tendered to Burwood Court stating Dennis “was unaware of how many alcoholic drinks she had consumed”.

Police arrived at the scene to find Denniss sitting on the ground behind her car, with a “strong odour of intoxicating liquor” and bloodshot eyes.

A breath test returned a positive result of 0.213 and she was placed under arrest before being taken to Orange Police Station.

Her licence was suspended and she pleaded guilty to the offence at Burwood Court on May 29.

She returned to court for sentencing on Tuesday when her lawyer said the experience had been onerous for her client, who had to pay $15,000 after the crash damaged the front of the vehicle.

Magistrate Christopher Halburd acknowledged Dennis as someone of exceptional character but said “someone could have got killed”.

“It goes to say you’re an exceptional woman who will learn from this,’’ he said.

“You’ve served others most of your life.’’

The court heard the doctor had completed a traffic offenders’ program.

She was disqualified for driving for six months, fined $500 and must use an interlock on her car for 24 months.
