A West Ryde student was sentenced for a string of domestic violence offences which were committed just months after an apprehended violence order was put in place for a woman’s protection.

Kaushal Khati faced Burwood Local Court on Tuesday for sentence. He pleaded guilty to assault causing actual bodily harm, three counts of common assault, two counts of destroying property and two counts of breaching an AVO.

The offender initially pleaded not guilty to the charges, which also included two additional counts of assault causing actual bodily harm and an extra common assault and AVO breach charge.

However these charges have since been dropped following a May hearing.

Magistrate Jennifer Price handed Khati a seven-month jail term, to be served in the community, and he was fined $1300.

Khati’s lawyer Mohammad Wafai previously said his client’s young age and non-English speaking background made him vulnerable in jail, where he had spent time on remand.

Mr Wafai requested his client be placed on an intensive correction order and insisted Khati could follow bail conditions, including being placed under house arrest, to prevent him from reoffending. He said Khati has no previous criminal history.

Khati had been granted bail in February under the conditions he reported to police daily, surrendered his passport and have no contact with the woman.
