Dr John Knight, better known as Dr James Wright, has been given a clean bill of health following surgery for bowel cancer.

Doctors at Sydney Adventist Hospital at Wahroonga operated on the 89-year-old earlier this month and have confirmed the cancer has not spread to other parts of his body.

Dr Knight returned home to Marsfield last weekend.

He told the Times he felt lucky.

“I’m still alive and still reasonably happy,” he said.

“If the cancer had spread, I might have as well said goodbye.

“Any big operation knocks you around so you’ve got to get your strength back and eat the right foods, so I’m doing all those things.

“I’ve never drunk or smoke so it’s bizarre that I of all people should get cancer.

“It’s luck of the draw, that’s how it is.”

Dr Knight urged other seniors to take preventive action against bowel cancer.

“The main message is all older people, and that means people over 65, should have a colonoscopy now and every three years,” he said.

“These horrible cancers don’t have any symptoms whatsoever and you pick it up through examination.”

He was recovering well at home.

“I’m looking after myself and getting my meals,” he said.

“I only weigh 59kgs. You lose a hell of a lot of weight from these things.”

Dr Knight was only recently cleared of any ongoing effects from throat cancer, which he had surgery for five years ago.

He has a practice at North Ryde, and founded the Medi-Aid Centre Foundation, which provides accommodation for retirees suffering financial hardship.

Dr Knight wrote a health column for the Times for many years, and still provides medical advice on radio.
