DR John Knight, also known as Dr James Wright through his media profile, has revealed he has bowel cancer and will have surgery on Friday.
Dr Knight, who runs a practice at North Ryde, was only recently cleared of any ongoing effects of throat cancer, which he had surgery for five years ago.
The chemotherapy has left him without his sense of taste and smell, and he does not produce saliva. He also had a skin condition to approximately half his body in the aftermath.
The 89-year-old will have surgery at the Sydney Adventist Hospital.
Dr Knight wrote a health column for the Times for many years, and was a regular guest on radio.
He has provided housing for people in need, and is a member of the Order of Australia for his services to health.
He has published books on his career, his latest being `Adventures of a merry medic’.
The Times will have an update on Dr Knight’s condition in print and online next week.
