THE truck driver who hit an Allambie Heights grandmother disposed of her clothing caught in his truck after he drove from the scene, police are alleging.

Jo-Ann Thwaites, 60, was struck by two trucks at the intersection of Old Pittwater Rd and Condamine St, in Brookvale, on Friday morning.

This comes as police conducted a surprise operation on the headquarters of the company the truck belongs to — Baiada Poultry in Girraween — checking the heavy vehicles for defects and testing the drivers for drugs and alcohol.

In the first two hours, 10 of the 15 trucks tested were issued with defect notices.

Police yesterday alleged that after the fatal collision the first truck, which didn’t stop, continued its daily run, stopping at the IGA in Allambie Heights.

One shopkeeper, who wished to remain anonymous, said the driver allegedly parked behind the shopping complex in Kelpa Place before disposing of clothing in nearby bins.

Baiada released a statement about the police operation following the fatal accident, which said: “We were extremely saddened to hear of this tragic incident.

“Our staff and management send their deepest condolences to Ms Thwaites’ family. Our thoughts are with them.

“We are doing everything we can to help police with their inquiry and will continue to provide any assistance they may require.”

IGA Allambie Heights declined to comment.

Yesterday police from the Crash Investigation Unit had arrived to review CCTV footage. Superintendent Stuart Smith appealed for witnesses to come forward.

“At that location we believe a driver did get under the vehicle and then disposed of certain clothing items that may or may not have been bloodstained into a bin at that location,” he told 2GB radio.
