TRAFFIC lights will be installed at a deadly Brookvale intersection where an Allambie Heights woman was killed.

It follows a two-month campaign by the Manly Daily and the family of road victim Jo-Ann Thwaites to fix the corner of Condamine St and Old Pittwater Rd.

Mrs Thwaites, 60, was killed by a truck in May while crossing the road near Warringah Mall.

Late yesterday, the RMS caved to mounting pressure saying Mrs Thwaites family’s wish for a safer intersection would be realised.

Her youngest son, Nicholas Thwaites, who had called for the lights with brother Johnathan, said it was “fantastic news”. Family friend Mary Delves said it was “finally something positive for those two boys”.

“That is just going to make so much of a difference to that young man (Nicholas), it will never erase the death of his mother, but it is just something positive,” she said.

Wakehurst MP Brad Hazzard had been lobbying Roads Minister Duncan Gay and RMS for action.

Mr Hazzard said he hoped the lights would bring some solace to the family.

“Every pedestrian, every driver passing through these lights for decades to come will be the beneficiary of Mrs Thwaites’ very sad passing,” he said. “This local lady’s family can now know that her passing, as terrible as the circumstances were, was not in vain. These changes are an important part of her legacy.”

Premier Mike Baird ordered a safety review after her death.

“Mrs Thwaites’ death shocked the community and this upgrade will go a long way in preventing a similar tragedy from ever happening again,” he said.

“I hope it gives Mrs Thwaites’ family some comfort, knowing everything has been done to improve pedestrian safety.”

In a statement, the RMS said traffic lights were “deemed the best option and will be installed at the pedestrian crossing of the eastbound slip lane”.

However, the RMS has not agreed to entirely govern the intersection. Instead “landscaping work and pedestrian fencing will be installed” at a slip lane.

Work is expected to begin in September.

The announcement comes after the Manly Daily conducted an audit of the site, revealing 73 of 100 cars flouted the law, driving through a stop sign installed after Mrs Thwaites’ death.
