SYDNEY mixed martial artist Richy Walsh has earned a spot on Brisbane’s upcoming UFC Fight Night card.
The UFC announced this morning that Walsh, a 27-year-old welterweight, will go head-to-head with Brazilian fighter Viscardi Andrade on March 20.
Walsh has been rewarded with a spot on the card — which is headlined by the heavyweight clash between Mark Hunt and Frank Mir — after a huge win in Melbourne last November.
Walsh, who lives in Manly, grounded out a win against veteran Steve Kennedy at UFC 193, which saw nearly 60,000 people pack into Etihad Stadium.
While most Australian mixed martial arts fans will know little about Andrade, he has fought in the UFC three times and currently has a 2-1 record in the organisation.
Asked about the upcoming fight, Walsh said he had already started studying footage of his opponent.
“He is pretty established in Brazil, he has got the experience on me,” Walsh said.
“I think he is kind of clunky but he swings with a bit of power and he is well-rounded.
“He is good in the clinch and he is definitely a dangerous guy to fight … as is everyone in the UFC.”
UFC welterweight Hector Lombard will co-headline the event American Neil Magny.
Lombard, a Cuban-Australian, returns to action following a one-year drug suspension.
