Sydney pub Modus Operandi offers eating challenge with world’s hottest chilli peppers

WOULD you eat a dozen chicken wings coated in a chilli sauce so hot it hurts for free beer? Watch reporter Bryn Kay give it a red hot go.

The toughest assignment for the Manly Daily's Bryn Kay and colleague Braden Fastier, the Reaper Chilli chicken wings challenge.

TWELVE chicken wings coated in the world’s hottest chilli sauce stand between punters and free beer at a northern beaches pub.

But as two Manly Daily staff members learned first-hand, the challenge is not to be scoffed at - it turns up the heat like never before.

Mona Vale’s Modus Operandi Brewing’s challenge tests if patrons can scoff down 12 chicken wings in 12 minutes.

Simple, right? Wrong.

Those 12 chicken wings are coated in a sauce that is made of the Carolina Reaper — the world’s hottest chilli, according to the Guinness World Records.

Armed with little more than some preparation tips found on Google, journalist Bryn Kay and photographer Braden Fastier took up the challenge, which proved to be messy … very messy.

The pair spluttered, coughed, swore and cried their way through the 12 minutes.

The $22 Reaper Challenge, which also includes ghost chillis to boot, is only completed by about one out of every 10 people, according to Modus Operandi co-owner Jaz Wearin.

“You would be surprised at the people that succeed at it … it’s all shapes and sizes,” she said.

If you complete the challenge, you get a free pint, a photo on the venue’s Reaper Challenge board and, of course, bragging rights.

There are rules.

While beer and water are allowed during the challenge, milk — believed to help soothe the burn of chilli peppers — isn’t allowed.

Mrs Wearin also has a word of advice for punters.

“For some people, when their eyes start to water or their nose starts to water, they rub their face,” she said.

“It's not a pretty sight (when the people rub the chilli in their eyes).

“You have to be very mindful where your hands are during the challenge.”
