Pittwater battle continues against proposal for a single ‘mega council’ on the peninsula

Pittwater Council has remained firm in its opposition to one northern beaches council despite Mayor of Manly Jean Hay calling a peace offering last week.

Pittwater Council has remained firm in its opposition to one northern beaches council despite Mayor of Manly Jean Hay calling a peace offering last week.

Pittwater Council General Manager Mark Ferguson said the council would not be swayed.

“Pittwater Council’s position, and endorsed by its community, is to oppose the one council,” he said.

Just last week, in an interview with Radio Northern Beaches, Cr Hay said whatever the outcome was for amalgamation, it was time for the councils to work together.

“At the end of the day we’ve just got to be big enough and work together for whatever we’re being given and for everyone to be united,” she said.

Warringah Mayor Michael Regan said he welcomed the comments.

“Cr Hay and I have always worked as close as possible for the benefit of our communities,” he said.

“It’s great that our community is engaged in this discussion about reform and it’s great that the government is listening.”

Pittwater Council’s “no mega council” campaign has ramped up significantly since the proposal for one peninsula council was put back on the table by Premier Mike Baird late last month.

The council also began lobbying its residents to show support for a Greater Pittwater council by making a submission to the boundaries Commission.

Public meetings have been called for March 21, 22 and 23 in Manly, Mona Vale and Dee Why for residents to provide their feedback on the proposal for one northern beaches council.
