Northern beaches found to have the highest fuel costs in Sydney

The NRMA say motorists should fill up their cars out of the northern beaches, as a survey reveals it is the most expensive place to buy unleaded petrol in Sydney.

Northern  beaches drivers will pay more for petrol this Easter than any other region in Sydney, according to the latest figures.

On average, the cost of unleaded fuel in Sydney is 109.9 centres a litre, but it’s 115.2 cents on the northern beaches, and 106.6 cents a litre in Hurstville, the cheapest area for petrol.

The figures come from comparethemarket.com.au, which analysed petrol prices in the last quarter (December 19, 2015 to March 19, 2016), and looked at how petrol prices would change coming into Easter.

NRMA local director Tim Trumper said holidaying motorists should look further afield than Manly or the peninsula for fuel this Easter.

“Our area is notoriously less competitive in pricing than Sydney’s west or southwest,” Mr Trumper said.

“That’s the result of having fewer independent stations. These almost always deliver cheaper prices than the major chains.

“The NRMA’s advice to motorists leaving the northern beaches for Easter is do your research before you leave with a view to filling up more cheaply elsewhere in Sydney.”

The Australian Competition and Consumer Commission said fuel prices can go up and down due to changes in international benchmark prices, the value of the Australian dollar relative to the US dollar, levels of competition in different areas and pricing decisions by wholesalers and retailers.

A spokesman for comparethemarket.com.au, which checks prices daily, said on Thursday the five cheapest petrol stations on the northern beaches were:

7 Eleven Narrabeen North — 114.9

7 Eleven Narrabeen — 115.4

United Dee Why — 115.7

Caltex Narrabeen — 117.4

Caltex Starmart Beacon Hill — 118.9
